Results of the 2004 Contest

Final Round  

The Final Round of the West Point Bridge Design Contest was conducted on May 14, 2004, at West Point, New York. With their parents, teachers, and contest sponsors cheering them on (quietly), the five finalist teams received new design projects for the West Point Bridge Designer 2004 and had just two hours to develop their designs.

Team Underground, from Friendswood, Texas, finished first. Each member of the team won a $15,000 scholarship.

NotEnoughPieces, from Irvine, California, and The Numenoreans, from Anamosa, Iowa, finished second and third, respectively.

All nine finalists received Dell notebook computers, in recognition of their successful completion of the Final Round.

Semi-Final Round  

The Semifinal Round of the West Point Bridge Design Contest was conducted from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. EDT on April 17, 2004. During this three-hour period, 80 semi-finalist teams received a new design project for the West Point Bridge Designer 2004, created new bridge designs, and submitted over 1,000 of them to the contest website for judging. The semi-finalists competed at locations of their own choosing and were monitored by teachers and contest volunteers.

The results of the Semifinal Round are listed below. The top five teams were invited to compete in the Final Round.

Qualifying Round  

The Qualifying Round of the West Point Bridge Design Contest was conducted from January 8, 2004 to April 5, 2004. During this period, over 15,000 teams registered for the contest and used the West Point Bridge Designer 2004 to design bridges. 10,700 of these teams submitted over 49,000 designs to the contest website for judging.

The teams listed below finished at the top of their respective zones and were invited to compete in the Semi-Final Round of the contest. The number of teams per zone is based on our decision to invite teams from ten different schools in each zone.

The top-finishing team in the Qualifying Round was Anduril, from Beavercreek High School in Beavercreek, Ohio. Anduril's design had a cost of $137,066.61. To appreciate what an amazing achievement this is, try downloading the West Point Bridge Designer 2004--and see how close you can get!
